Artificial intelligence is not just another wave of technology.
It is the biggest transformation in business we have ever seen, redefining how strategy is built, how value is created, and how decisions are made.
Yet, remarkably, most boards are not even in the game.
According to Deloitte’s global study Governance of AI: A Critical Imperative for Today’s Boards, based on insights from more than 700 directors and executives across 56 countries, the reality is sobering.
Thirty-one percent of boards say AI is not even on their agenda.
Sixty-six percent admit they have limited to no knowledge or experience with AI.
That gap is not a small one; it is a governance blind spot.
While AI is reshaping business models, productivity, and risk exposure at unprecedented speed, boardrooms remain cautious, often under-informed, and strategically passive.
Deloitte’s report introduces an AI Governance Roadmap, a framework built around six essential focus areas that every board should now internalize:
Strategy, Risk, Data, People, Operations, and Culture.
- Strategy defines how AI supports long-term value creation and resilience.
- Risk addresses algorithmic bias, data integrity, and ethical use as part of enterprise risk management.
- Data is recognized as a board-level asset and strategic foundation for AI-driven business.
- People ensures leadership and workforce development align with AI-enabled workflows and learning.
- Operations integrates AI into decision-making, compliance, and performance tracking.
- Culture builds trust, transparency, and accountability into the company’s innovation DNA.
