The flow of investment hasn’t stopped; it has simply found new directions. As markets and geopolitics reshape global priorities, investors are quietly moving from digital growth stories to defence, security, and resilience. A new era of market allocation is taking shape, particularly in Europe.

For the past decade, much of my professional work has revolved around the stock market, specifically around companies preparing for listing. These have often been emerging, fast-growing ventures seeking market access, visibility, and funding to fuel expansion. Most belonged to the digital economy, natural products of an era defined by connectivity, data, and user experience.

Today, that landscape looks very different. The market now reflects a broader societal transformation. Where investors once chased engagement metrics and user growth, they increasingly look for technologies that strengthen Europe’s strategic capacity, companies that can protect infrastructure, secure data, and ensure continuity in uncertain times.

This week’s Financial Times article on Iceye, the European satellite company now exploring new funding at a $2.5 billion valuation, perfectly illustrates this shift. Investors are repositioning funds toward companies that serve the continent’s growing demand for defence technology and national security capabilities. Iceye’s evolution, from Arctic radar monitoring to defence intelligence and partnerships with global defence groups, captures the essence of this new market dynamic: innovation following necessity.
